Five most useful cooking implements

  • citrus juicer
  • knife sharpener
  • Microplane - they really are as sharp as the manufacturers claim; worth saving up for
  • kitchen scissors - when someone hasn't nicked them
  • Magimix - I use this most days
What are your must-haves in the kitchen?

This time last year I was posting a delicious very low-fat Christmas pudding.

13 comments:

  1. Microplane, inversion hand mixer, mandoline, vegetable peeler, mini-food processor.

  2. Veg peeler - one of those ones that looks like a razor, Kitchenaid mixer, scissors, tongs, timer on a rope (I am very bad at remembering things I am cooking!)

  3. OMG, so many things I've left out ;) ... the hand mixer, known in this house as my wand, the timer ... thanks Peter, thanks Eliane

    3 Speed veggie peeler
    4 sharp knife
5 Wooden fork (imagine like a spoon) have gone through 3 in 5 years but they are most definate favourite utensil!

  5. Oooh - smart new look Joanna!

I'm not big on gadgets in the kitchen, so here's my lo-tech list:

    wooden spatulas
    kitchen scissors
    small sharp veg knife
grater (have a fine grade microplaner too - pretty good but get along fine with the retro one)
    umm... can't see another gadget
the hand stick-blender whizzy thing's pretty useful - it came with Cliff when I married him!
and I love my Moulinex electric hand whisk c.1970 rescued from my Mum before she binned it!
oh the timer on the cooker, but then again I usually time things by Radio 4 programme schedules :-)

  7. Ooh, good question.

    For me, it would be...

    1. Microplane - I have just the fine one and wonder how I ever managed to zest a lemon before. I'm hoping for the coarse grater for Christmas.
    2. Kenwood Chef
    3. Silicone spatula
    4. The humble wooden spoon
    5. Silicone tongs

  8. Kenwood Chef, stick blender, my big kitchen knife, grater and scissors.

I would love a microplane, time to start saving I think!

I can't live without a rubber spatula in the kitchen. I use it even where it doesn't make sense. Like for turning fish or whatever.

  10. Stick blender, herb mill, mini hand whisk, wooden spoon, measuring cups, are top of my list.

    Like the new look blog.

  11. I'm feeling all warm and toasty after seeing that Aga Joanna!

    My top 5's, mmmm....
    Double ended rolling pin thingy.
Small electric chopping thing with stick blender, ice attachment and large blender (that is all one thing!)
Magimix - must have for pastry.
Bread machine - use it everyday.
A thing to lift food out of the frying pan, not sure what they are called - maybe a fish slice? BUT I love the mini one.

  12. I don't know what a microplane is! Off to Google it.

    My own list:
    - Knife and knife sharpener (the kind you buy at a hunting/fishing shop)
    - Hand blender (with the whisk/processor attachments)
    - Griddle pan
    - Scales
    - Wooden spatulas

That was hard! Think I cheated too. ;)

  13. Wendy - a Microplane is the best best best grater you will ever find - they don't pay me, honest ;) I've had mine for several years, and they are still as sharp as ever. Really worth the money
