Pretend fudge

I'm not a great one for food substitutes - I always could tell Stork from butter, sweetener from sugar etc etc. But when I read a recipe for pretend fudge, I thought I'd give it a go, because Lucius really likes fudge, only, of course, it's banned because it's almost all butter.

I made this for Lettice's birthday tea, and everyone liked it a lot, but, I have to warn you, no-one thought it tasted like fudge. It lacked that grainy quality, for a start. But there were quite a few people who couldn't stop eating it, and not all of them were children.

Chris calls her recipe Easy Schmeezie M&M Fudge. I couldn't make that, because I didn't have any M&Ms in the house. I couldn't even make it how she did, because there wasn't quite enough chocolate in the house, unless I broke open the chilli chocolate, but I'm the only person in the house that eats it. So mine was a bit softer than it should have been.

Melt 300g dark chocolate with the contents of a 400g can of low-fat condensed milk. Or use a bit more chocolate (Chris's proportions were 12 oz choc to 14 oz condensed milk) for a firmer result. Mix thoroughly, and pour onto a well-lined shallow tin. Cool, then cut into squares.

Thanks, Chris!

  1. You're welcome! The great thing about blogging is finding out (1) that there are those who really do read my blog - ha! and (2) how others interpret and work with the recipes according to there preferences, needs, etc. This is wonderful!

I am trying to get a recipe in for Heart of the Matter, but am not sure I will get it in before I leave for my trip. If not, I will definitely be back for July! :)

  3. I completely agree with you about blogging, Chris, it's the element of dialogue that is so interesting.

And Tanna, you're so right, chocolate is terrific stuff - this is particularly good ... everyone here was very cross when the dog found the last little bit and ate it up!

  4. That is so simple, I will give it a go! I haven't seen low fat condensed milk before, but then again, I have probably never looked!
Apparently my gran used to love a sandwich spread with condensed milk!

  5. I am one of the few people who dislike chocolate...intensley for the simple reason I am soooooooooooo alergic to it! As a teenager I suffered many years from migraines so when the allergy was dtected the migraines stopped. I ate chocolate when given as presents but would never buy from choice.

    Strange, but true.

Good to know we can have a treat & feel smug about no-butter at the same time!
